15 Things You Don't Owe Anyone

Happy Tuesday, you beautiful people!

Someone posted an article by Jade Smith from The Open Mind on Facebook, and it just bowled me over. I think I had unknowingly been desperate to hear it; to be reminded that I don't owe anybody an explanation. For anything!

Here's the article:
15 Things You Don't Owe Anyone At All (Though You Think You Do).

PREACH IT, JADE SMITH. Everyone is different. Everyone is living life at their own pace, with their own priorities. And none of us should feel the need to sit down and explain to anyone - our friends, our family, our co-workers - why we are doing what we're doing! WHO CARES.

Although I was doing the silent clap and nod of affirmation as I read through all of them, the one point that resonated the most for me was:
You don't owe anyone an apology if you are not sorry.
Right?! I am a chronic over-apologizer. I apologize if someone forgot to attach an attachment, and I have to email them and ask them to resend. I apologize if I brush by someone in the hallway. I apologize if a courteous person lets me go in front of them in line. I apologize when I have to get off the phone with a family member because I have to go to work. What is my problem? And why don't I realize how lame that makes me look? No one likes me more for it. And it just dilutes the real apologies.

If you are guilty of the same (Don't apologize for it if you are! We'll get stuck in a vicious circle!), you  have to see this Pantene commercial about overusing the word "sorry":

I want to buy a bottle of Pantene shampoo, cradle it in my arms, and whisper, "You get me. You really get me."

But...instead...I'm just going to try to apologize less. Cuz I don't owe nobody nothing.
