Dolly Parton's Commencement Speech to UT

Earlier this summer when I was having a bummer day, one of my mentors, the lovely Ryan Harris, sent me this commencement speech Dolly Parton gave to the University of Tennessee back in 2009.

It was exactly what I needed! It was like Dolly perched herself right up on my coffee table to give me the life advice I was desperate to hear. So I'm sharing it with you guys, in case anyone needs that sort of pick me up today!

It's 18 minutes long...but you don't have to watch the whole thing - just listen! Have it on while you're writing those emails or taking a walk or tidying your family room. Or if you can't watch but you want to read it, here's the transcript. (You'll just miss out on her terrific delivery. She's such a showman! So impressive!)

I think my favorite quote of the whole speech is this one:
"Do not confuse dreams with wishes. Dreams are where you visualize yourself being successful at what it's important for you to accomplish. Wishes are hoping good things will happen to you, but there's no fire in your gut that causes you to put everything forth to overcome all the obstacles."
So good. Watch and enjoy!

PS. If you take anything away from this video, just remember her four hopes for this graduating class...

Dream more. Learn more. Care more. Be more.

What we should all strive for!
