Song Report: Secrets by Mary Lambert

Here's a song to brighten your Monday - it's Secrets by Mary Lambert.

Oh, Mary! What a joyous celebration of happy, honest living. And it's wrapped up in such a catchy song, to boot! Of course after hearing this song, I obsessively googled Mary Lambert (as is customary in this day and age). I quickly discovered I had heard her before - she lends her beautiful vocals to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' Same Love, another pro-LGBT song.
Mary Lambert aka the prettiest skin and hair I've ever seen.
(I'm not trying to obsess on body image; she just has really
pretty hair and skin, ok? She's also super talented and seems nice.)
Mary is using this song to showcase to women (and all people) that it's ok to be open and honest about who you are. She hopes by revealing her own secrets - about bipolar disorder, her sexuality, and her body image issues - that she will encourage others to talk about their own issues, so that we can make this world a more open, accepting place.

As she told HitFix recently, "I felt like there were a lot of songs coming out about self-empowerment and challenging beauty standards, and I wanted to write a song along those same lines, but in my voice. There is so much shame and guilt in our society, and I think it has deprived a lot of people from living fully. We are all facing battles...we've all had someone who has hurt us. So let's talk bout it." Yes, let's talk about it! And let's talk about it in a really good, super catchy song!

Her full album "Heart On My Sleeve" comes out in October, but a handful of songs from this album and her two EPs are already available for purchase on iTunes.

An openly gay musician and spoken word artist, Mary has a history of using her music to convey her opinions on everything from LGBT issues to overall acceptance to body image (as if you didn't pick up on that already from her hook in Same Love). Body Love Pt 1 & 2, available on her 2013 EP "Welcome to the Age of My Body", are two songs/spoken word pieces on women's bodies and how we need to embrace women of all shapes and sizes. Read more about the songs and see the video in this HuffPo piece.

Mary's instagram of the adorbs couple, as seen on PerezHilton.com.
Mary had a rough childhood, dealing with sexual abuse and struggling to reconcile her sexuality and her Christianity. It's so incredible that she was able to turn her trauma into beautiful art that both captivates and educates her audience!

ALSO Mary is dating Michelle Chamuel, a runner-up on the fourth season of The Voice. Michelle is a badass musician and producer in her own right. Check out one of her Voice performances here. I love the idea of these amazing people making music together!

Lambert is touring this summer with Matt Nathanson and Gavin DeGraw. Check her out in concert! Or if you can't see her in person, follow her blog/website here or like her on Facebook. She is hilarious and kind and intelligent and awesome and basically I just want to be her.

While you go explore all those fun sites, I'll just be here, listening to my new theme song Secrets on repeat! Have a good time!
