If You're Not Listening to Serial, You're Dead to Me

OK, not really, but OMIGOD you really have to start listening to Serial!

Serial is a new podcast created by Sarah Koenig in association with Ira Glass and This American Life. As they state on their website, "Serial is a podcast where we unfold one nonfiction story, week by week, over the course of a season. We'll stay with each story for as long as it takes to get to the bottom of it."

This season (their first season) tries to uncover the truth surrounding the 1999 murder of 17-year-old Maryland high schooler Hae Min Lee and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Adnan is in prison for life and swears up and down that he did not kill Hae. Sarah Koenig spends each episode investigating this 15-year-old case and, in the process, going back and forth (along with the rest of us) on whether she thinks Adnan is guilty or not.

I don't know how to describe it other than totally amazing. Wait, I do - someone said it's like True Detective meets This American Life. And it is! They release one new episode a week, every Thursday, and it's painful to wait for the next one, they are just so gripping. Sarah Koenig is a masterful reporter and producer - it's so enjoyable to be on this journey with her.

And what's fascinating, as we careen toward an inevitable conclusion of this season (though I'm not sure how many episodes there will be), is that Sarah really is just a reporter, so it's not like suddenly at the end of this season Adnan is somehow going to be proven innocent and let go. So everyone who is listening is also under this spell of...what's going to happen? How can this all wrap up? What does all of this mean for the real life people involved?

(If you are caught up on the episodes, please share any theories in the comments! I'm obsessed with talking about this with anyone who will listen!)

You really must start listening. They just released episode nine, so it is not too late at all to catch up and be a part of this cultural phenomenon. PLUS, they aren't releasing episode ten until December 4 because of Thanskgiving (which almost makes me want to cancel the holiday). So you have two weeks to catch up! The episodes vary in length from around 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the topic that week. You can subscribe for free via iTunes and other audio platforms, or you can just listen from their website.

For those of you who are dedicated listeners like myself (and newbies, you should come back to this after you catch up), you have to check out these charts made by Michelle Rial over at The Bold Italic. They seriously brought me so much joy, I cannot even tell you. Brandon and I looked through them multiple times, giggling repeatedly. Here's one of my favorites:

Also, some dudes have gotten together and created a loving parody of the podcast. And oh, is it so spot on! Listen to them here. Apparently these guys are creating more, so check back often!

And if you start listening and become obsessed, email me! Let's discuss!!!

PS. They are also taking donations right now, so we can have a second season! Be sure to visit the website and donate!
