The Universal Pregnancy Question..."How are you feeling?"

“How are you feeling?”

It’s the number one question asked of every pregnant person ever. And, honestly, it’s the number one question I ask pregnant and post-pregnant people, too. Because I genuinely want to know. But now I understand that it’s such a hard question to answer! 

Usually I just say, “Good! I feel really good. Things are good right now.”

Because there’s so much going on in my head, I can’t possibly explain it all. 

How am I feeling here? Way more sober than my husband when he took this.
More sober than everyone at the wedding, honestly.

But if you really want to know, here’s how I’m feeling:
  • WAY better than I did in the first trimester. Hooray!
  • But I’m still tired all the time and probably nauseous once a day.
  • I have to go to the bathroom right now (you can just assume I have to. All the time).
  • I’m terrified of how I’m accidentally hurting my baby by exposing him to laptop EMFs or caffeine or sugar or the sun or pollution or stress or aliens.
  • Beautiful. I love my belly.
  • Limited in my clothing choices, but grateful to my sister and Emily for lending me all of their maternity clothes.
  • I’m feeling my baby kick and it’s the absolute BEST THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.
  • Hungry. Always hungry but nothing really sounds good (except for beets, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate chip cookies. And pickles and olives. And ice cream. And Chinese food. Ok, so just nothing that healthy sounds good.)
  • I cannot WAIT for the next four months to be over so I can meet our new roommate, but I also desperately need that time to get ready.
  • In need of a nap.
  • Like cleaning. I want my whole house to be spic and span. I have never cared so much about the condition of my baseboards and window sills. I swear I didn’t even notice that we had baseboards in our last house.
  • Pretty calm at work because, man, do babies help you put things into perspective. Growing this little guy is the most important thing I’ve ever done.
  • However, my husband would probably say that sense of calm does not extend to our discussions, where I can get very heated, passionate, and pretty weepy.
  • Oh yeah, and I basically always feel like crying. For both good and bad stuff! I got choked up the other day as we went through the security line because we were randomly selected to go in that special TSA screening line where you don’t have to take your shoes off or remove anything from your bag. I literally had tears in my eyes, I was so grateful. I had to turn away from the TSA officer so he didn’t think I was complete weirdo.
  • I miss drinking wine with my friends. I don't miss getting drunk; I just miss the social camaraderie of a glass or two of wine.
  • Amazing. I’m creating human life. I’ve never felt so important.
  • But also, I really need a nap.
